The Story Behind Men’s WAR (Without a Roof) with Prostate Cancer

A 1967 graduate of West Charlotte High School and a proud military veteran, Thomas Brown forged a path through adversity that few could imagine. After serving his country, he built a respected career in the nuclear, chemical, and petroleum industries—working with Westinghouse Nuclear Turbines, Duke Power, and facilities nationwide as a QA/QC Inspector.

Behind the professional successes, though, were decades-long battles with addiction that began during his military service. Over the course of 35 years, he endured nine treatment programs and the crushing reality of homelessness. However, in 2005, Thomas chose to focus on surrender, resilience, and recovery. With unwavering support from shelters, family, the Veterans Administration, and his church, he became drug-free and began his next chapter as a productive citizen.

In 2007, homeless and living in a halfway house, a routine medical exam revealed a new obstacle: prostate cancer. Following a prostatectomy and 12 weeks of radiation treatment, Thomas emerged cancer-free by 2013. After earning his Associate Degree in Health Administration, he went on to work and serve at the VA hospital for a decade, supporting patients in Rehab Medicine and Oncology (cancer) clinics—many of whom were battling the same demons he once faced. His education, combined with years on the front lines of patient care, deepened his commitment to advocating for men’s health and standing beside those fighting for their lives.

These intertwined experiences of addiction, cancer, and homelessness ignited a singular purpose: to help men who feel unseen and underserved. While making donations at a local men’s shelter, a thought struck him— “At least one of these men has cancer and doesn’t know it.” From that moment, Men’s WAR (Without a Roof) with Prostate Cancer was born.

Today, he calls upon compassionate professionals, donors, and advocates to help expand this life‑saving effort. Men’s WAR (Without a Roof) with Prostate Cancer is not just an organization; it’s a testament to the healing power of purpose and proof that, from the harshest battles, something beautiful can rise.
